World view: horseback fishing on the Belgium coast

Oostduinkerke, on the west Flanders coast in Belgium, is the only place in the world where the 500-year-old tradition of trawling for shrimp on horseback can still be seen. It was once practised extensively across the Flemish North Sea coast, but now only a few fishermen still ride into the sea – on draught horses – to spread their nets and trawl at low tide.
