This week’s new events

Thought Bubble | Real Ale Wobble | The Big Knitathon | Out & about

Thought Bubble, Leeds

Thought Bubble, the UK’s largest comics festival, provides a forum for superhero cosplayers and manga fiends to brush shoulders with small-press creators. Art workshops abound and more ambitious scribblers can vie to impress Tharg, 2000AD’s green-skinned editor, while next weekend’s convention counts Radio Comix’s Brandon Graham among its international writers. Thanks to a team-up with Leeds international film festival, there’s also a complementary programme of films, from family adventures to Jodorowsky’s provocative Santa Sangre.

Real Ale Wobble, Llanwrtyd Wells

Uninitiated drinkers may believe that any evening imbibing ales will result in something of a wobble. But in this instance the wobbling refers to the result of the tired legs of cyclists as they traverse the Welsh countryside between beer and food stations. Coffee and soft drinks are available for those who believe Welsh ales may hinder any riding through forests, but as the event is not a competition you’re free to bumble along as you wish. The weekend event marks the start of the ten-day Mid Wales Beer festival, so there is plenty of non-cycle-bound wobbling to follow.

Bromsgrove Hall, Sat & Sun

The Big Knitathon, Nationwide

Unravel your mohair for this mass attempt at the world’s biggest hand-knitted blanket. Needle nifties and beginners alike will be crafting six-inch squares in church halls, community centres, wool shops and museums. Tea and cake feature (naturally), while some gatherings promise bring’n’buy sales. Don’t cast it off as twee; the money raised from the behemoth will directly fund the Big Issue’s support workers, and help spread awareness about rough sleepers.
